After trying the fire exit (Right beside the neon sign! It looked viable!), we eventually wandered in through the kitchen instead of through the conservatory like everybody else.

Now that we had firmly established ourselves as not knowing what we were doing, we felt more comfortable and at ease with the illusion gone. We were sat in the area surrounded by windows that allowed us plenty of natural light and a nice view of the Park while we ate. Not long after being seated, we were informed that our table had a reservation on it for one hour later. I wondered if our tactless entry made the server deem us unworthy of eating for more than 60 minutes and she was putting us on. Regardless of which, we weren’t in the position to hang around too long anyways, so there.

Our coffee was pretty good, well above the rancid-lake standard that so many places adhere to. I got the Star Breakfast, which came with pan fried potatoes instead of “hashbrowns” which was nice to see. They were very good as it turned out, with green onion cut into them. The potatoes were seasoned and cooked well, although the occasional larger piece turned out to be starchy. Leif was actually not taken with the potatoes at all, though me and the others were. Just a note. I received three pieces of tasty bacon, and my multigrain toast was good, but rather small. Other breakfasters got the rye bread, thick and tasty. Leif’s sausages turned out to be plain ol’ breakfast links, but just a hair above what you may find in the greasier spoons around town; no gristly bits.

The eggs came as ordered, nothing spectacular. All our plates were adorned with star-cut carrots, which was cute, but unnecessary.

Our server was friendly, quick and offered us refills several times, too many than we needed actually because we had satisfyingly large coffee cups.

If you’re spending the day in the Park, for sure check out the Star Grill for breakfast or lunch. The menu was replete with tasty options like smoked salmon, the atmosphere can’t be beat, what with the view, and the service was swift. Just remember to walk through and enjoy the conservatory first!

Leif is distracted by the sausages and rolls of fat.

Star Grill

In the Assiniboine Park Conservatory

$10.85

Hours of operation:

Mon - Sun                  9 AM - 9 PM

We happened upon The Star Grill quite accidentally. We were originally going to eat at the  Bread & Circuses on Lilac, but found out too late that they don’t actually do a Breakfast Special. Too bad, the coffee and bread there looked great! We ended up piling into a conveniently-available vehicle and jetting off with eyes peeled for tasty options. We were headed into Charleswood when I remembered about the Conservatory, so in we went! Well, it wasn’t actually that swift… we had a hard time finding the entrance to the restaurant!
