The pictures on the menu looked like plastic food; unappetizing. This accurately portrayed the hashbrowns, which were little more than deep-fried frozen tater tots. Tasty like fried food is, but an extremely lazy method of potato preparation. They also dried out quickly, returning to their original in-the-ground starchy texture. The sausages were similarly deep fried, totally melting all the fat inside giving them a creamy texture.
It was slightly disturbing. The bacon was a little underdone, but in that way it was juicy and flexible. A tasty break in the usual crispy regiment our bacon has undergone recently, but Leif didn’t enjoy it. He’s a man who likes his bacon crispy. The ham was actually not good enough to finish. There was a hard skin and the entire thing was like plastic.

I got pancakes with my big country brekkie, and they were disappointingly dissimilar from Aunt Jemima. They advertise it as Smitty’s brand, but nothing’s stopping them from repackaging ol’ Jemima’s hard work, I figure. Same thing with the coffee, it was just Edward’s with a Smitty’s label on top. One good part was the multigrain toast. I always enjoy multigrain when it’s available.

There were fake plants everywhere and no music whatsoever. Smitty’s is an inoffensive family restaurant with an extremely questionable breakfast. I’ll come back for the wings, but just like with your mom, I’ll not be there in the morning.

Just kidding, I like your mom, but not in that way.

Bonus Omelette review

by Chantal Guénette

Benedict omelette (served rolled up, not folded in a half circle).

Bouquet: That’s a neat idea, combining the omelette and eggs Benedict. The omelette was filled with slices of back-bacon,

cheese and was topped with hollandaise sauce.

Boeuf: I don’t know what they did to their eggs, but they were D-R-Y!! Was it powdered eggs? Did they flash cook them (cooking them on very high heat for a very short period of time)? I’m not sure, but whatever it was, a piece of un-buttered toast would have had more moisture. I tried to mask it with my hollandaise sauce but it was the powdered stuff, so it wasn’t very tasty and there wasn’t a lot. The omelette didn't come on a bed of English muffins - as is customary with eggs Benedict - and they didn’t have any flavourful hot sauce to help with the dryness either since the hollandaise wasn't cutting it.

This pot is Huge!

I’ve never actually looked at the menu in Smitty’s before. I’ve only ever come for the patio on wings night. I was actually surprised to learn they had a breakfast, I just didn’t expect it. Wing and breakfast just don’t sit next to each other in my mind.

The dining room has a distinct Perkins feel. There are dividers everywhere so it’s kind of like eating in a limo. They easily accommodated our party of ten.

The coffee was from the stirred part of the underground reservoir, but there was no mistaking it for being subterranean. It was fairly plain and unexciting coffee.
