First thing our party noticed when we sat down were the dirty knives. It went down from there. The cardboard-like potato tots were too salty, apparently from sucking the flavour out of the rest of the meal. I received over-medium eggs instead of my requested over-easy, something that not many restaurants have done.
We always say “How hard is it to screw up eggs?” Well, getting the order wrong is a great way to start. The sausages were from the giant generic sausage factory or the “sausage fairy” as I like to refer to it. These are sausages that you shouldn’t have to pay for.
All that, and the view from the windows was of the ventilation systems of the hotel. Nice. I know downtown Winnipeg isn’t much to look at on the ground level, but seeing the back of a building makes me feel like I’m eating in an alleyway.

Rib Room
(In the Best Western Hotel - Charter House)
330 York Ave
Hours of operation:
Mon - Thurs 7 AM - 9 PM
Fri & Sat 7 AM - 10 PM
Sun 8 AM - 9 PM
Great Canadian Breakfast $7.99
Aside from having a terrible name, The Rib Room has a presumption of fanciness. They use a ridiculously ornate logo and the inside motif is of dark pastel colours. There was even a “Proclamation” framed on the wall from the 1960’s, giving the illusion of tradition, and bottles of wine used as decoration.
Needless to say, I didn’t buy into the image. I could tell that it was going to be “just another hotel breakfast” right away, and I wasn’t proven wrong. The menu was sort of entertaining, describing the cinnamon buns as “Warmed gooey goodness” which is kind of how I like to think of myself.

This was just another hotel breakfast that’ll do in a pinch if you’re staying in the hotel and don’t want to leave the building, but the Breakfast Connoisseurs recommend that you should explore your other options.
This restaurant used to have a sense of humour and some proper style. A Jumbo Shrimp cocktail was $1.05 and Soup du Jour was 30 cents! They have remodeled in the past five years or so and now it looks like any other bland North American Hotel. (sigh)
