The service was efficient and friendly. When we were there it was not busy at all, but for our table of 8, food delivery was swift.

The breakfast special looked satisfying, and did not disappoint in any way. Three strips of crispy bacon lay atop of a mound of pan-fried potatoes (advertised as ‘golden hash browns’) which were lacking in neither taste nor quantity. Eggs came as ordered and they rye toast was standard; a dilapidated piece of orange and some parsley seemed summarily pushed onto the plate, but the thought was nice.

A few fellow breakfasters ordered the breakfast quesadilla, eggs, tomato, green onion and cheese in-between tortillas. Looked great and was enjoyed. Side orders of hash browns were ordered in addition to the quesadillas, none of which were able to be finished, the portions were so large.

The coffee was, as expected, standard diner fare. I’m no coffee connoisseur, but the inoffensive blend was welcomed for a few refills.

The Princess Grill serves up a solid breakfast, with an exalted lunch menu. Close to Red River College and municipal buildings, this is the ideal place to stop in on your lunch hour. The only thing is that the décor may remind you of the office a bit too much for it to really feel like a break, but I’m sure you’ll manage.

Princess Grill: 8

85 Princess St.

Princess Grill

“Breakfast Classic” -

$4.99 plus coffee for $1.49

(not including tax)

Ends at 11am.

The Princess Grill is fairly nondescript from the outside and given that the Exchange District has a unique lighting dynamic, it makes it impossible to see inside windows no matter what time of day it is.

On the inside, the Princess Grill is a good sized restaurant with a spacious seating area and lots to look at. The large windows, while maintaining a shield of opaqueness to the outside, allow for ample light inside. The natural light is complemented by the ‘art-deco’ fixtures on the wall and the modern, hanging half-globe lights above. On the walls are photos (currently by local photographer Murray Hammond, for sale), watercolours, line drawings and even a gigantic painting of Kramer from Seinfeld, the one featured prominently in an episode. Nice touch.

The colour scheme on the walls (taupe, beige and cream) is reminiscent of an office… complete with cubicle-like barriers in front of the washrooms. One needn’t feel too far from work while eating here, apparently. The metal chairs and pleather(?) tabletops make for an efficient seating arrangement, with just a hint of style.
