Hey Google! Breakfast reviews in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada by Leif Norman and Andrew McMonagle. We are the  Breakfast Connoisseurs Join us for Restaurant Reviews!

The breakfast itself was kinda standard, but still good. It was: eggs to order (artfully grilled using metal spatulas to keep them moving), two strips of pressed-grill bacon, warming-tray hashbrowns and toast. Everything was cooked well, but I found my hashbrowns a bit flakey and dry. Leif says his were great, and I’ve been back a couple of times since, with no complaints about the potatoes at all. It’s not often I can accurately identify an ‘off day’ for a food item, but in this case I can. The toast was a bit untoasty and under done, and we had to butter it ourselves, which I hate. Seriously, when you have to do it yourself, the toast is always cold by the time you get to the butter!

The best part of breakfast was the tasty coffee. They use Green Bean coffee, and they grind it there. Well done Diversity! I still have bad memories of the Chartwells stank brew.

To top everything off, they use compost-able cutlery, plates and coffee cups. Presumably, the body of Chartwells is slowly decomposing in the back. Pangea’s was great, check them out when you’re on campus.

The new Diversity food services at the U of Winnipeg is a MUCH welcome relief from the dreaded Chartwells demon. Seriously, what was up with them? (They suck. They were like airplane food, but worse, and you’re not even going anywhere nice. Leif) The conversion received a lot of press, so I needn’t say much about it other than it is now very green and very refreshing.

The menu was displayed on a flatscreen TV, just because they’re cool I guess. Not very green, but the University likes to be flashy. (They have to change the menus daily Andrew, because they will have Elk sausage and Bison burgers one day but  not the next. Leif)

There were several decent breakfast options (see picture), but they were all missing something… bacon! Breakfast didn’t come with bacon outright, which I guess is a cheers to vegetarians everywhere. Nothing came with coffee either.

However, these are mild complaints, and really, they are easily outweighed by the condiments alone. They gave us paper cups of home made peanut butter, green hot sauce and hand made blueberry jam (no, not all mixed together, although that might not be bad), and they were all freshly made in the kitchen.

I drooled a bit.

Bunches and bunches of fried mushrooms

The grill where upon things are fried.

Self serve everything.

Spacious seating!
