The large booth was most welcome when our food came, as it all arrived on satisfyingly large platters. Very nice presentation with everything was laid out very orderly. My two eggs were over-easy and basted. With the choice of bacon, sausage, ham, salami, bologna and back bacon, I had bacon and Joel the sausage. Heather had ham which was real, not pressed or processed. My five perfect pieces of pork in consortium with his three, split-down-the-middle super tasty sausages made us smile. The rye bread was large and the hash browns were shredded and tasty. But overall, the hash browns were a little soft for our liking; we surmised they were frozen at one point.
The condiments were plentiful and varied. Excellent selection of jam packets (grape!), but no peanut butter. We had two types of syrup to choose from, one being made with artificial sweetener (a customer request?). The hot sauce was Louisiana, which made us wistful for some Frank’s.
The service was efficient. Our coffees never got to the bottom (truly bottomless, I love it) even though it was characteristically busy there; our server was very fast on her feet. She must have a lot of experience in serving. She impressed us all with the skill at which she poured the coffee, making it look like more of a toss than a pour, with the absolute perfect amount of coffee coming out and not a drop spilled. Good coffee too.
Best moment of the breakfast: someone from the back walked out wearing a garbage bag instead as an apron. Can’t fault his creativity.
The tremendous décor of The Paladin is worth eating there just to see it. Located on the East side of St. Boniface, it’s a little trek from downtown, but well worth it. The mushroom farm stench outside not detectible inside at all.

The Paladin is an eclectic place to eat. It has two rooms on the main floor and one more on top, up some of the steepest steps I’ve ever seen in a restaurant. Each has a different feel to it but it’s the main room where we ate that is an attraction. On the first floor, the large, cozy room has been commented to feel “like the inside of a ship.” The tulip-like orange lights on the wall are a nice change from the usual fluorescent overhead lights that are so popular. Illuminated are the many pieces of art on the wall, all looking like they came from the 1930’s. Old photographs, tasteful wooden carvings and nice paintings fill up any space on the walls not covered by wooden beams and a small window or two. The décor is plentiful, but not overdone. There are two types of booths to choose from: the standard diner square and a nightclub-style horseshoe. Our diner square was pleasingly large, offering space for the five of us to eat comfortably. There was no space for a chair at the head of the table however, so there was some ‘tyrannosaurus arm’ action happening on the side with three people (see picture).
