I ordered the steak and eggs while Leif went for the traditional breakfast special, and we were both very surprised by how good the food was. The potatoes were super garlicky and laden with dill. They were deep fried, but it was done well, showing that it’s not the style, but the cook that makes the meal. We’ve had bad deep fried potatoes (
J. Sprat’s) and good ones too, but much more rarely (Rae & Jerry’s). My steak was fantastic for a breakfast meat, and the slurge factor overall was mid-range. The eggs and toast were as eggs and toast are – difficult to screw up – and we were so distracted by excellent omelettes and eggs Benny that we forgot to order bacon! A Breakfast Connoisseurs first.
The coffee was really good though. It hit our mouths and got running straight away, as opposed to the kind that’s so weak that when you sip it, you wonder if it actually passed over your tongue. Ghost coffee.
Our meals were topped off by big slices of cantaloupe which we consumed while watching the place slowly but steadily fill up with distinguished older clientele. We were the youngest there, by far. Hopefully this review will draw this hipsters and will confound the serving staff.
Maxime’s is a frontrunner for best breakfast of 2010.
