Sunday brunch hasn’t looked this good in a long while. Nice, big cups of decent coffee, satisfying cutlery (had a nice weight to it, not flimsy and nibble-notched like we’ve had before) and a patio that he had to fight the city Beaurocracy for made it a nice experience before the food even came.
When the food did come, I nearly had myself a little happy episode. My plate was overflowing with fruit, such that I had to ask Daniel if we were getting special treatment. He told me he knew we were coming, but that it wasn’t special treatment. Further visits by Leif confirmed this.
Breakfast was great. I got “J. Fox’s big breakfast,” which gave me all three hog-related breakfast products one expects with breakfast – bacon, sausage and ham. The meats were generally good, but the sausages were definitely from the factory in Brandon that churns out average meat.
I was delighted to get pumpernickel toast, and the hashbrowns were real potatoes, grilled. Very nice. And again, the fruit… oh, the fruit. They’re competing with Cora here... kiwi, pineapple, watermelon, melon and peach, and not in served in a small fruit-cup. I’m guessing that these are only available by season, but the dedication to fruit pleased me.
J. Fox’s only competition in the area is the Frenchway. River Heights is host to some of the best weekend brunches available, I hope they realize it.

J.Fox’s is another in an long line of Feltic pubs in Winnipeg (that’s Fake Celtic to you). It’s in the tradition of Shannon’s, Dylan O’Connor’s, Finn McCue’s, Tavern United… basically just a bar with a generic veneer of Irish, English or Scottish.
J.Fox’s is in the old Academy Coffee House building with a complete renovation done, but it still felt a bit like the old Academy to me, just darker.
J. Fox’s is the newest incarnation from ex-Toad in the Hole owner Daniel Pedly. He told me that it opened it as Johnny Fox’s in early 2008, and was rechristened after he had a dispute with a peer. He also said it was a dispute at the Toad that made him leave. I briefly wondered if Daniel was a victim of fate or just a disagreeable person. He was nice to me, and his breakfast was so good that I really don’t care.
