Another weak spot was the coffee. It was so weak that when I added a bit of cream, all I could taste was cream. Fortunately they had a small selection of specialty coffees, and between the lot of us in our party that day, we tried them all. The latte, espresso and cappuccino were all excellent.

Despite the coffee and ham fails, J & H hold the record for biggest, yummiest pan fries and I look forward to coming back.

J & H : 8.5

J & H Restaurant

2635 Portage Avenue

All-day breakfast special - $6.95

J & H are John and Helen Damianakos. They run J & H along with other family members, including Spiro, their son, who served us and is very happy and attentive. Jon was on the grill; we don’t know if he was happy.

J & H is one of many Greek diners in Winnipeg, but was more endearing to us than most. The super friendly service and the good food made this restaurant stand out in my mind. It had a certain charm to it, what with the mirror art, the REAL plants inside and the carpet on the wall - but just look at the delicious food in the pictures.

The pan fries were awesome and unique – just huge slabs of potato, baked to perfection. There were no dry, starchy bits which so often can plague a big potato hunk. The special comes with so much bacon you’ll choke. We were served six pieces of bacon each, but somehow I ended up with seven. No complaints about that. The eggs were as eggs are, and though the bread selection was limited to white or brown (no rye!), they had my favourite brand of cock sauce hot sauce to guzzle. One weak spot were the non-bacon – the ham was the ham equivalent of MDF particle board and tasted gamey and grilly. The sausages were standard breakfast links which are never a cause for celebration.
