Breakfast Special

$5.25 Breakfast served until 11 AM

The Grain Exchange looks super sketchy from the outside, and that’s been equally a deterrent and attractor for us. We finally decided to go once we learned that the building is slated for demolition in the spring of 2011. Upper Fort Garry is expanding, so it’s gotta go.

It’s too bad, the owners are very nice people.

D’s restaurant was a classic greasy spoon style, just the kind that we appreciate. It had cool stools at the bar, but we sat by the windows to watch the curling. Typical of a curling club, they only serve breakfast if there’s players (makes sense), so you better call before coming.

Our orders were made extraordinarily quickly (felt like 3.5 minutes exactly, just enough time to cook the eggs), though we were the only people there eating. I ordered over easy eggs and got sunny side up which was a bit annoying, but only to a connoisseur like myself.

The rye toast was fine, but the hashbrowns were all dark and greasy; obviously deep-fried. We got five pieces of decent bacon each, and I got a side of sausages. The sausages were all shrinky-dink
and had a really funny taste.

Seriously, what WAS that taste? No idea, but it wasn’t pleasant.

The coffee was weak but thankfully not ganky.

What can I say? The breakfast was barely passable. The sausages left me with bad memories and the rest was forgettable. It’s too bad this cool old sketchy building is going to be torn down, but I won’t be missing the brek.

Grain Exchange Curling Club: Ham & cheese omelette

Bouquet: I was the first to order and the first to receive my food. That doesn’t happen very often, especially with omelettes.

Boeuf: The ham was shaved deli ham, the cheese was processed, and there was no hot sauce to be found anywhere (other than the bottle I brought). All in all, it wasn’t too impressive.
