Be careful when you order at Garry’s or you might end up standing in the take-out line by mistake like we did. There are two separate cash registers, with no order cross-over. We were sternly told to get in the right line. No time to waste for breakfast!

Since most of the customers appeared to be businesspeople from the Trizec building (Commodity Exchange Tower) or others close by, speed was a necessity. I remember working at Convergys years ago when it was there, and our lunch breaks were timed to the second. Thankfully, I abandoned that type of constrictive work environment long ago and haven’t looked back. To any Convergys employees reading this (I know of a few offhand), I know your pain.

Garry’s actually had a little bit of daylight coming in through the windows by the escalators (Garry’s is in the SE corner of Wpg Square, beside Chamberlyn’s), which was a nice treat. We’ve dined at other underground locations and felt the loss of our sunshine-given Vitamin D. The restaurant is styled for efficiency. On the walls is fast-food art (as we call it) that appears to be the bottom of the cheap bin at the poster store.

There are large triangles on the ceiling that we’ve seen in other place. Definite trend of geometric ceiling decals.

As can be expected from a cafeteria, the coffee came from a set of stationary carafes, was bad and cost sixty cents for refills. Leif and I each got 4 ½ pieces of grilled bacon, a pile of deep fried potatoes, and eggs that were to order. A mini-bottle of Frank’s hot sauce was on hand to spicy things up a bit, which was needed.

Our toast came as tiny, almost adorable pieces of rye bread. The potatoes were probably the best deep-fried potatoes we’ve ever had, but that’s like saying it was the tastiest pork popsicle. We’d really prefer if they weren’t deep fried.

If you’re set on not going outside from the mall (as is completely understandable in the winter), Garry’s is your place. Otherwise, take a stroll.

Garry’s is the Cyclops that is king over the blind. This subterranean bacon-slinger is your best bet for breakfast in Winnipeg Square. There are a total of four other places serving breakfast in the mall, but they are all fast foody kiosks in the food court, whereas Garry’s is a cafeteria.

Benefit?

The people you sit next to in Garry’s are paying customers only.

There actually was a Garry, and he opened the Deli 30 years ago on Jefferson Ave. (Not the same Garry as the street nearby.) 20 years ago he moved into Winnipeg Square and, I imagine, lost all traces of being a deli. Seriously, it’s a cafeteria calling itself a deli. Our server told us that the place is frequented by hockey teams like the Toronto Marlies.

Just like how the Wagon Wheel is the place for football teams to go. At least, according to Louis the owner, it is.
