We dined with Leif Larsen, Editor-in-Chief of The Manitoban (hereafter referred to as “the other Leif”). He wanted us to review the breakfasts on the UofM campus, and we were glad to help out. We were long overdue for a visit anyways. Yes, Leif and I are both partial to the U of W (and The Uniter), but that doesn’t mean we don’t like visiting.

As the other Leif recorded our personalities, or lack thereof on his iPad, we found out that the immaculately written chalk-board menu was accomplished with the use of a projector. No Free Hand Michelangelo! We never realized! There must be just one person who does that for restaurants around the city… are you that person? Contact us! You are slightly interesting!

While eating we were told that Aramark was taking over the U of M food services. Say it isn’t so! Food production companies like Aramark and Chartwells serve the cheapest food, the fastest way they can. Disgusting! Stultifying! We jumped for joy when Diversity Foods took over for Chartwells at the U of W last year. We will be reviewing Degrees soon, and we hope they can take the brunt of the Aramark bruise and keep providing an alternative.

In conclusion – Edna Fedya will feed ya real good. Just don’t ask for Edna’s autograph.

Edna Fedya

1 Research Road

Here’s the big (non) secret: Edna Fedya is really Stella’s, just under the location’s previous name. And we’ve already reviewed Stella’s. Good thing we love Stella’s, so this wasn’t a problem. Our server told me that it was a condition of the sale of the building, to keep the name. It is catchy, after all - as the sign says, “Who Fed ya? Edna!”

Disclaimer - Edna no longer feeds ya. She got bought out by Stella.  So Stella fed ya.

Also - There are two Leif’s in this review. Be mindful.

Since you already know that we love Stella’s, here’s what we don’t like about this one. This Stella’s almost completely lacks the charm of the other locations (even the Grant Ave. one). It feels pretty sterile, but at least there was great art on the walls constantly supplied by the ex-dairy cattle barn full of Fine Art students about one kilometer to the east. There is no bakery on-site, so the air is sadly free of freshly-baked bread goodness, a vital part of the Stella’s experience. The location really leaves a lot to be desired unless you’re driving to the “Smart Park”. It’s a 15 minute walk from the #60 bus stop. Research road is on that lonely stretch of Bison Drive that characterizes the Fort Garry campus.
