Maybe the “something right” they were doing consisted purely of holding the monopoly of all-day breakfast places in the building. While at first they pleased me with their selection, the quality quickly confirmed their mall-food status. First off, we had a massive order screw-up, where they had to take all our orders back behind the counter to shuffle the ingredients around. Before the food even arrived, we were disgusted by their coffee. Not only was it sour and awful, but it was served in a Styrofoam cup. Luckily, the Human Bean coffee shop was open and nearby.
The Forks claim to be working on their environmental impact but I think it’s shameful they even started with disposable plates. A plate service would mean less waste, greater compost output and possibly more jobs.
Moving on, the potatoes were the best part of the meal. They were chopped, thick and tasty. The bacon was decent, and while the sausages were butterflied to melt the gristle, they certainly came from the factory of free sausages we believe exists in Brandon, MB. [This mythical factory is the sole supplier of breakfast links or sausages for Winnipeg. This is our theory anyway and would explain why 99% of the break sausages look and taste the same.] The eggs resembled shaved kitten bellies, a phenomenon we’ve seen before at Junior’s and is a mystery as to how that texture was produced in an egg. Our theory is that eggs become like this when cooked with no oil, on a teflon pan. The taste was fine, but the appearance was a little disconcerting. The toast was good. Way to go for not burning it.
In summary, they serve disposable plates and cutlery, don’t have hot sauce and appeal to parents who bring young, loud children. Danny’s doesn’t come close to the top of our list, but in many ways it was better than expected.
Omelette Review by Chantal Guénette
Ham & cheese omelette
Bouquet: The ham was real, and the cheese wasn’t processed.
Boeuf: It wasn’t really an omelette, it was more of an egg pancake. Maybe even an egg crèpe; it was pretty thin. It spread out across my entire (paper) plate and they didn’t have any hot sauce. Luckily, I brought my own that morning…

A Kiosk is a small enclosed structure, often freestanding, open on one side or with a window, used as a booth to sell newspapers, tobacco, etc.
Danny’s had a pleasingly wide selection of breakfast foods, from the Special to “looney cakes” (small pancakes), omelettes, crepes, corn beef hash and French toast. There was a lineup when we arrived at 10 AM, so I thought they must be doing something right. The eating area consisted of wobbly tables in the common hall, but since it was a Saturday morning, the hall was home only to fellow breakfast enthusiasts and their boisterous children. Huge amounts of natural light made it a decent atmosphere, and the Forks is just quirky enough to be interesting. Too bad the preponderance of small, loud children ruined any tranquil effect the setting had.
Shaved kitten belly eggs.
