We had choices of corn bread or cracked-wheat. Leif tried the corn bread and it came in biscotti-like sticks which were tasty. My flat cracked-wheat was very good. The bacon was done well and the eggs were too. A single strawberry adorned the plate, but as this was February, it was white at the core and hard.

They gave us little doses of homemade hot sauce in chinese soup spoons which was sweet and tasty.

Given the state of the potatoes and the fruit, why did we rate it so highly? Well, the coffee was unparalleled, the corn bread was super, and the presentation was fantastic. Our server was friendly and chatty, and the décor in the restaurant wasn’t overbearing. I believe that if they left the potatoes on the grill for a few more minutes they would have been perfect. When we see that, we might bump them up to a 9.5.

Dandelion Eatery has a surprisingly good breakfast. I didn’t know they even offered it until I cold-called them. The restaurant is as dedicated to good, local food as the store is. They just finished some renovations, removing the wall between the restaurant and the store.

The first thing of note is that Leif actually uttered the words “This coffee is strong!” This was a historic moment, and they should be lauded for it.

The deli-style restaurant doesn’t have room to seat many, but all the seating is bathed in natural light from the large windows. Unfortunately the view is of traffic-heavy Donald Street, so you have to make due with good company.

My breakfast was great except for one thing – the potatoes were underdone. This was very frustrating for me as potatoes are the lynch-pin of a good breakfast. They were cut into small chunks and seasoned nicely, but at the same time were greasy and almost crunchy. Too bad.

It has to be said that we were the first diners of the day, but still. Otherwise, the presentation was gorgeous. A good lookin’ plate! They even came around with a big pepper grinder! What other diners do that?

Bonus Omelette review

by Chantal Guénette

Dandelion Eatery: Mushroom, spinach & goat cheese omelette

Bouquet: I feel kind of silly re-iterating the fact that the ingredients were all fresh, organic & local; but they were. And they were DELICIOUS. I LOVED that omelette.

Boeuf: There was only one omelette available and it only came with toast. No hasbrowns (to be fair though, it didn’t need hashbrowns because the omelette was so filling).
