City Submarine

155-393 Portage Avenue

(In Portage Place mall food court)

Hours of operation:

Breakfast served from 6am - 12pm

Deluxe Special - $4.69. Medium coffee $1.29.

I was surprised to learn that City Submarine does breakfast; I was not surprised that it was mediocre. I mean, what can you expect from a food court, really? Well, you can expect paper plates, Styrofoam cups and disposable cutlery.

The menu was curious – the written menu listed only “hashbrown” with each breakfast, even when pluralized (“2 hashbrown”). Yet, the picture of the hungry man breakfast said “hash browns” and showed cubed potatoes, unlike the single, limp hashbrown patty they gave me.

The breakfast was as disposable as the place setting. I was not impressed to see the coffee was from our nemesis - Aaramark. Even though they offered a half-dozen blends, they can’t fool us by disguising quality with quantity.

There were two inoffensive parts to breakfast – the eggs were fine (it’s hard to f#@k up eggs) and the multigrain toast was actually really good. That’s all. The bacon tasted like grill and the deep-fried hashbrown patty made me sad.

A&W across the food court did a better breakfast. I’d sooner go to Timmy’s for a B.E.L.T. than return to City Submarine.
