English brek is always greasy and puddle-y. Lots of Slurge for sure, but the beans always make for a sloppy plate on their own. I expected that. What I didn’t expect was the large sausage that was pretty much just a fatter version of the factory breakfast links we’re used to. Not the best, in terms of quality but slightly tastier.

Speaking of quality, the menu was full of spelling mistakes such as “praire” and “vegetabels.” They still had Christmas decorations hanging around even though it was March, and the toast was unassuming Winnipeg Rye. However, their coffee was good and strong, and their tea service was fancy and extensive.

I want to come back for trivia night, or just for a good English dinner.  Good luck Sally!

Full English Breakfast - $10.95 before coffee & tax

Sally Mann, owner of the Brit Café, has received a lot of press lately. They are in the running for best expat British restaurant in the world, and good luck to them. They certainly corner the Brit market in Winnipeg. Not bad for a company that started out doing t-shirts in Kildonan Place Mall four years ago.

The Brit Café is a small little place on Portage, full of British charm and crazy crap for sale. They have a garage-sale like store to the side of the register where you can buy an $8.00 pint glass or fill up on some of your favourite British candy like Flakies and Jelly Babies.

I got the Full English Breakfast, which had fried eggs, “English” bacon (not side or back, but something else… like ham) baked beans, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, sausage and toast (if you want it). Truthfully, we came at an inopportune time as, due to their recent press, they had run out of a bunch of their essential items including hashbrowns.

They were out of most of their fish as well, but that’s okay. I hate fish for breakfast.
