Brunch Buffet - $16.00, coffee $2.50

We’ve been to Blaze before for the a la carte menu and this time we came back for the buffet. We found the a la carte to be expensive and not quite worth it. Well, that stands for the buffet as well. It’s only $1.50 more than the a la carte special, so if you feel like you have room for an extra handful of bacon, just go for the buffet.

Be careful on their buffet line, the heavy metal lids on the warming trays slam back loudly. The contents of the trays were typical of buffet anywhere – tray o’ bacon, tray o’ breakfast link sausages (ugh), soft potatoes, scrambled eggs. There was kubasa (as the spell it) as well, but it was plastic-like and not happy-making. The coffee was better than we expected – tasty, but not very strong, and they just left a big carafe on our table for us. I like that. I also like unlimited orange juice, even if it’s just Tropicana instead of fresh-squeezed like at the Falafel Place.

There was a great selection of pastries and strudel, and their fruit selection was ample. You have to toast your own toast, which is sort of cool ‘cuz if you get cold toast, it’s your own damn fault. Nice selection of breads.

While the restaurant has very nice art on the walls, the atmosphere is impersonal/corporate. Blaze is expensive, but with decent food. But expensive. Did I mention the special is $14.50? Yeah. Sometimes we like expensive breakfast like The Velvet Glove or the Fort Garry buffet, but Blaze just doesn’t ring our bell.

The breakfast was not bad, but by no means was it worth the price. It was a completely standard breakfast with fancy trimmings such as jams in disposable tins instead of hermetically-sealed plastic tombs (but they had blackberry jam!), ketchup in ramekins and a couple of slices of melon on the side. It also came with unlimited orange juice and coffee which raised the bar a bit, but still not that much. The best part of the breakfast was everything else other than the breakfast.

The potatoes were cut with the skins on and then desecrated by being deep-fried. The eggs were plain, the bacon was quiet and boring but the multigrain toast was a pleaser. Everything was cooked well – almost as if they have good chefs in there that know how to cook, but can’t imagine anything fancier than a slice of melon.

I heartily recommend going for the buffet instead of the breakfast special even though we haven’t tried the buffet yet. Economically, it just makes sense. I still feel the sting of paying $15 for what should have been a $7 breakfast.

Did I mention that they played elevator music the whole time we were there? I think they were trying to hypnotize us into being complacent with the bill.

Delta Canadian Classic - $14.50

(served until 11 AM)

The first thing you need to know about this exorbitantly-priced breakfast is that it’s served at the same times as the breakfast buffet, which costs almost exactly the same. We ordered the special because the inscrutable exhortations of our soul told us we had to (thanks, Bill Watterson for that combination of words). We’ll go back for the buffet another time.

The décor is much like The Current at the Inn at the Forks – nouveau hotel as we’ve dubbed it. That means it was slightly fancy, was painted with Earth tones, had art on the walls (prairie art – 90% sky) and a fireplace in the corner. The mix of drop-down ceiling and exposed exhaust pipes was interesting.
