Their English muffin had fake cheese on it, which seemed to be the only instance of fake in the restaurant, aside from the plants. “Everything is home-made,” the server said. The pancakes, while good, but made us question the definition of home-made. Something could be considered home made if you mixed the contents from the package yourself in your kitchen, right? That may have been the case here.

All in all, 4 Sisters was a decent place for breakfast. There’s not much else in the immediate area, now that Ham n’ Eggs is closed (aside from the attached Pampanga Restaurant). Cheers is nearby, but then again, so is the Siloam Mission. If you miss your turn onto Princess, stop in at 4 Sisters. They have free wi-fi.

4 Sisters Restaurant & Snack Shack

342 Higgins Avenue

Breakfast Special - $3.95 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. After 11:00 a.m., $5.25. Coffee $1.75, free refills.

This turquoise denizen of Chinese/Canadian/Ukranian cuisine is tucked away on Higgins Avenue, just west of the turn-off to Princess Street. Guaranteed they have no walk-by traffic, but they seem to be doing alright. They’ve been there, in the building attached to the ass of the Pampanga Restaurant, for five years. It is operated not by four sisters, but by a mother and her three daughters, plus a few of her sisters.

Their Wellington coffee was good and strong. We were surprised that it wasn’t north-end style, where you get it yourself. The owner/operator was by our table multiple times with refills, which we gratefully accepted. Inside, 4 Sisters looks like an underwater Junior’s restaurant, but the cuisine was much different. As noted before, it had a mix of ethnicities on the menu, but we were just searching for breakfast. A Canadian/Ukranian mix is what we found. I got the breakfast special with kolbasa sausage.

The sausage was in button form and was quite tasty. Kolbasa comes in as many forms as it has spellings: kielbasa, kolbasa, kubasa… however you spell it, it spells garlic sausage. And that’s what this was. Leif got bacon with his breakfast, and it was similarly good. The hashbrowns were nice thick chunky hunks o’ potato with the skins on, grilled perfectly and lightly seasoned. The toast was choice of white/brown or rye, and was, as toast is. So were the eggs, as eggs are.
